The in-app Report a bug option is best — it attaches diagnostics automatically. You can also use the same form here.
Frequently asked
Does Calliope listen through my microphone?
No. Calliope never requests or uses microphone access — the app is built with recording explicitly disabled. It analyzes an audio file you have chosen, not sound in the room.
Where does my music come from?
Two places, and they behave identically once added. You can add audio files from your phone or from Drive with the + button, or search the built-in library of freely licensed music. Added tracks are copied into the app's own storage so they keep working offline and after a restart.
Do I need an internet connection?
Not for the part that matters. Beat detection runs entirely on your device, so analysis and training work offline. You only need a connection to browse and pull in tracks from the built-in free music library.
What are the three training modes?
- Count — follow the count as it runs, and keep your place in the phrase.
- Distance — Calliope names a number of beats; you tap the instant you are exactly that far from the next 1.
- Locate — no announced target. You are dropped into the track and tap when you believe the next phrase 1 lands.
Each can be run as a fixed ten-round session or endlessly. Missing an instant is not fatal — the track keeps playing and the target comes back around on the next phrase, at a small points cost.
Why is the detected beat wrong on some tracks?
Beat detection is automatic and, on most steady music, accurate. It struggles with material that has no stable pulse — rubato, heavy syncopation, ambient or free-tempo passages, and very quiet or heavily distorted recordings. If a track is consistently mapped wrong, send it to us through the bug report form and say which one it was.
Why does analysis take a moment?
A neural beat tracker is running on your phone's own processor over the whole track. It runs in the background and the result is cached, so each track is only mapped once — after the first pass it opens instantly. Older devices take longer than new ones.
Where are my scores stored?
On your device, and only there. There is no account and nothing is synced. Uninstalling the app removes your scores, settings and added tracks. See the privacy policy for the full picture.
Is there an account, an ad, or a tracker anywhere?
No to all three. Calliope has no user accounts, no advertising, and no analytics or crash-reporting SDKs.
Troubleshooting
Analysis fails or never finishes
Confirm the file actually plays elsewhere, and that it's a normal audio format rather than a video or a DRM-protected download. Very long files take proportionally longer. If it fails on a file that plays fine in other apps, that's a bug worth reporting.
No sound during a session
Check the device isn't on silent, that the volume is up, and that no other app has taken over audio output. Disconnecting and reconnecting Bluetooth headphones clears most routing problems.
The count feels offset from the music
Bluetooth audio adds latency that varies by device and codec, and it can be enough to push the count visibly out of sync. Try wired headphones or the built-in speaker to tell a latency problem apart from a detection problem.
The app is slow or closes unexpectedly
On-device analysis is memory-hungry. Close other apps and try again. If it happens repeatedly, report it with the device model — that detail is the most useful thing in the report.
Requirements
- iOS iOS 17.0 or later. iPhone and iPad.
- Android Android 7.0 (API 24) or later.
- Storage Added tracks are copied into the app, so they use space until removed.
- Network Optional — needed only for the built-in music library.
Calliope is in development and is not yet on the App Store or Google Play.
